How to Get Here

We recommend flying into the Morelia airport (MLM), if feasible. There are daily flights from Chicago, Dallas and Houston (as well as Mexico City).

For those of you living in southern California, a domestic flight between Tijuana and Morelia on Volaris Airlines can be very affordable, although they may not be available daily. Please check the Volaris website for more info.

We can arrange transportation between the Morelia airport and Casa Werma for $45 usd one way. The trip will take 1.5 – 2 hours. We arrange for arriving participants to share this ride and fare when flight times align.

For folks with a little more time and a little less money, flights into Mexico City followed by a very safe, luxury bus trip to Patzcuaro can be much cheaper.

  • In the Mexico City airport, first find an ATM or “cajero de efectivo” to get Mexican pesos. We would recommend withdrawing about $3500 pesos, or around $200 usd. Depending on your timing, you may want to find something to eat in the airport.
  • Then, look for the taxi stand where you buy a ticket for the taxi to one of two long-distance bus stations with direct trips to Patzcuaro. (Be specific about which bus station as there are four long-distance bus stations in the city):
    • If arriving in the morning, which we recommend, if possible, as this option is easier, go to Terminal Central del Norte (or Autobuses del Norte) north bus station. It should be the peso equivalent of about $10 usd.  This trip should take 20 – 30 minutes.
      • In Autobuses del Norte, find PrimeraPlus bus line ticket counters for trips directly to Patzcuaro. The fare is about $30 usd one way. The trip is five hours, the bus stops only once in Morelia for about 10 minutes. Again, these are luxury buses with comfortable seats and personal TVs and movies (in Spanish, of course) at each seat. You will receive a very small snack and beverage for the trip (usually a ham sandwich, no other options). Depending on your timing, you may want to find something to eat in the bus station.
        • PrimeraPlus has three trips per day, departing 9:00 am, 11:45 am, and 1:40 pm. It’s best to arrive at the bus station one hour before departure. Buses start loading 10 – 20 minutes before departure.
    • Terminal Central Poniente (another common name: Observatorio) west bus station. It should be the peso equivalent of about $20 usd. This trip will be more than an hour.
      • In Central Poniente, find Autovias bus line ticket counters for trips directly to Patzcuaro.
        • Autovias has nine direct trips per day. The best hours for departure are: 11:30 am, 3:15 pm, and 5:30 pm. Otherwise, you would be arriving in Patzcuaro after midnight. It’s best to arrive at the bus station one hour before departure. Buses start loading 10 – 20 minutes before departure.
  • Once you arrive at the Patzcuaro bus station, please take a taxi, only $35 pesos. You can give instructions to the driver in broken Spanish or write the following down on a piece of paper to show them. The trip will take only a few minutes. Direct the driver to:
    • Casa Werma, Libertad 80 con Espejo.
  • And you will arrive at the door of Casa Werma!
